First Year Students

Tuesday, August 22nd

You can check-in for Orientation any time between 8:00am and 4:00pm! If your residence life move-in time is in the afternoon, feel free to check in for Orientation in the morning. If you are a commuter student, we suggest you check-in for orientation before the start of the Commuter Student Interactive Panel at 2:00 pm. You will NEED to check in for both residence life and Orientation. Please plan accordingly as we will not be able to check anyone in after 4:00pm. You will receive your wristbands for meals throughout orientation at check-in.

Opening Convocation
Location: Wilson Field   
Convocation will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. 
Students, please enter the Field through the North Gate starting at 6:15 p.m. 
Families proceed to the bleachers of Wilson Field through any gates. Additional seating will be available on the field.   
This traditional event is the formal opening to Chapman’s academic year. Faculty in full regalia march in procession and President Struppa officially launches the semester. After Convocation, Orientation will officially begin.  

At the conclusion of this Program, families please remain seated as students exit through the North Gate and proceed to the Residence Halls for a Mandatory Residence Life Meeting if they will be living on campus or to the Argyros Forum, Great Room for the Commuter Student Social. Once students have exited, families are welcome to attend the Wine and Cheese Reception hosted by Dr. Jerry Price, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, on Aitken Arts Plaza.   
*Note: Please be prepared for a delay between Opening Convocation and the Wine and Cheese reception.

Meet current Chapman commuter students and learn from those who have navigated this experience successfully. There will be refreshments, sweet treats, and games for all to enjoy!

You will receive an email with information about your community meeting where you will meet with your Resident Director (RD) or Graduate Resident Director (GRD) and Resident Advisor (RA) while learning more about living in the residential community. This also provides the opportunity to meet your suitemates and neighbors.

During your Fenestra Forum sessions throughout the week, you will meet with your Orientation Leaders and classmates from your major. These sessions are a time to get to know your peers, discuss Orientation events, and understand what to expect during the week. Please be in attendance, as your specific rotation locations will be explained in this session.

Departmental Major Meetings  
Location: See end of schedule for your department meeting location. 
Students will learn about their major and ways to be successful within their academic program. This is also an opportunity to meet staff and faculty members from your major. 

3:45 – 4:45 p.m. 
Student Business Services and Financial Aid Workshop 
Location: Beckman Hall, Room 404 
Representatives from Student Business Services and Office of Financial Aid will answer your questions regarding billing, loans, and scholarships. Both families and students are welcome to attend. 

4:30 – 6:30 p.m.  
College of Performing Arts Welcome Reception 
Location: Lindquist Esplanade (next to Waltmar Theatre) 
This reception is an opportunity to meet new students in the College of Performing Arts as well as some of the faculty and administration with whom you will be interacting while at Chapman. This reception is for declared Theater, Theater Performance, Screen Acting, Dance, Music, Music Education, Music Composition, and Music Performance majors.

4:00 – 7:00 p.m.

College/School Welcome Dinners 
Please attend dinner at the location of your student’s declared major. This is an opportunity to meet new students in your School/College as well as some of the faculty and administration with whom you will be interacting while at Chapman. Food lines will be located at Schmid Gate, Bert Williams Mall, and Dodge College of Film and Media Arts please go to the closest location for your dinner.

Specific dinner locations will be released in the beginning of August.

Igniting Your Future: Candle Lighting Ceremony  
Location: Aitken Arts Plaza
Incoming Chapman students, parents and families are invited to gather around the fountain in the Attallah Piazza to celebrate the pillars of Chapman University symbolizing our intellectual, spiritual, social and physical life. This brief ceremony will end with a beautiful candle lighting as we bid goodbye to families and welcome you to the Chapman family!

This is an experience you will never forget! Wear something comfortable (ideally close toed shoes!) and get ready for a fun activity that will get your energy pumping and give you the chance to meet the entire incoming student class.

Chapman After Dark 
Location: Sandhu Conference Center
Break out the glow sticks and get ready for a bright night full of fun, food, music and dancing put on by Residence Life and First Year Experience! You will have the opportunity to go up to the Sandhu Conference Center to enjoy the Silent Disco Dance Party! Take a break from the dancing and enjoy a dessert bar where students will have the opportunity to unwind, play games, and be in good company. There will also be a guided paint and sip where you will be able to start your dorm decorations early!

This unique experience for students to touch base with faculty will allow them to go into their first day of class confident and prepared. The first 100 sign-ups will be receive further information.

As a first-year student, you will be faced with many personal decisions that will impact your college experience. This MANDATORY educational program will equip you with the necessary information to make informed and healthy decisions. Don’t forget to bring your Chapman ID card to receive credit for attending!

The Wellness at Chapman rotation takes a multidisciplinary approach to student well-being. You will also participate in the beloved Chapman tradition of tying your ribbon to your class’s Window of Opportunity sculpture.

Students will hear from Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Student, Jerry Price, about policies and procedures on Chapman’s campus and the core educational principles upon which they are based. This MANDATORY educational program will equip you with the necessary information to make informed and healthy decisions when encountering the Chapman community as well as the resources available to support you. This session will outline what is expected of Chapman students when they join the Chapman community.

This session provided technical difficulties and we will upload the session onto the Canvas Course you were added to on Tuesday, August 23rd. You will receive further information on how to fulfill the mandatory requirement in the first week of school. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

There are many things that shape who you are, which can encompass your race, gender, cultural identity, and so much more.  Collectively, you will begin to shape the Chapman culture through learning about yourself, each other, and how we all fit into and create this community.

This will be the last formal meeting with your Fenestra Forum group. This forum is for students to ask final questions ahead of the school year starting, share final thoughts about Orientation and take a photo with your fenestra group! This will provide time for students to learn how to successfully carry their momentum from Orientation into the opportunities that are to come in the upcoming year.

Affinity Socials 
Location: Argyros Forum, Room 304 (Cross-Cultural Center) 
Come mix and mingle with other students and staff that identify with or are currently exploring a certain affinity, all while enjoying light refreshments and snacks. Students may attend and meet with as many affinity groups as they identify with.

First-Generation College Students
Meet other students who are the first in their family to go to college! Learn about the resources available to you and how to make the most of Chapman as a first-generation student.

International Students
Join us for the International Student Social.  We will get to know each other and talk about the bus & train system, nearby grocery stores, restaurants, fun things to do, etc.  Current international students and staff will be available to answer any questions/problems you may have!  

Spiritual Exploration Social 
The Fish Interfaith Center on the Chapman University campus offers opportunities for students who are interested in spirituality of any type. If you consider yourself simply a “Seeker,” curious about developing your spiritual path, practicing meditation, or learning about different religions, we have opportunities for you. If you are involved in or interested in a particular spiritual path, such as Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, or Judaism, we can connect you with student groups to pursue your faith journey. We offer particular programs for students from more progressive Christian denominations, Latter-day Saints, Catholic, and non-denominational churches. Finally, our beautiful Wallace All Faiths Chapel, located in the Fish Interfaith Center, is here for your use! Come and meet our staff and find out about programs and space available at Chapman for you!

Students with Disabilities
This social is an opportunity for our incoming students with disabilities to network, ask questions, and dialogue as we enjoy each other’s company and experience. This will be a great time to gather to begin the process of building a community within the Chapman community and discovering the resources available to you as you navigate your college experience.

LGBTQIA+ Community
Chapman’s LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex & Asexual) staff, faculty and students are thrilled to welcome the Class of 2026 into our open and welcoming community!  This social will provide a chance for new students to explore ways to get involved in the LGBTQIA+ community here on campus through organizations such as Chapman Feminists, Queer and Trans People of Color Collective (QTPOCC) and Queer Student Alliance (QSA), mix and mingle with other like-minded individuals, and begin building a network of support to enrich their Chapman experience. 

Students Who Identify as Women
Come to this social for the chance to network with women who have the potential to affect Chapman University in a positive and significant way. Women are shifting both the academic and work world and this social is a great way to meet your peers, start the process of supporting one another, and learn about the resources Chapman has to help you successfully navigate your college career.

Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Community 
This social is an opportunity for our incoming students of color to network, ask questions, and dialogue as we enjoy each other’s company and experience. This will be a great time to gather to begin the process of building a community within the Chapman community.

If you consider yourself a “spiritual seeker” curious about developing your spiritual path, are interested in practicing meditation or learning about different religions, or are committed to a certain spiritual or religious path, we have opportunities for you. Commemorate the beginning of your Chapman experience with an interfaith celebration, mindfulness meditation and labyrinth walk led by student leaders and the chaplain staff of the Fish Interfaith Center. The Fish Interfaith Center is here to help you shape your unique spiritual journey.

Parent Reception for New Disciples of Christ/United Church of Christ Students 
Location: Wilkinson Founders Chapel, Fish Interfaith Center 
Parents/families of students who come from congregations related to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) or the United Church of Christ are strongly encouraged to come to the one-hour information session about the Disciples on Campus program. You will receive helpful information on scholarships and opportunities for your student. Please come without your student to this event. If your local congregation’s affiliation is not specifically Disciples or UCC, the session will not be relevant to you.

This traditional event is the formal opening to Chapman’s academic year. Faculty in full regalia march in procession and President Struppa officially launches the semester. After Convocation, Orientation will officially begin.  

At the conclusion of this Program, families please remain seated as students exit through the North Gate and proceed to the Residence Halls for a Mandatory Residence Life Meeting if they will be living on campus or to the Argyros Forum, Great Room for the Commuter Student Social. Once students have exited, families are welcome to attend the Wine and Cheese Reception hosted by Dr. Jerry Price, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, on Aitken Arts Plaza.

Visit with the Office of Parent Engagement and the Executive Parents Ambassador Council (XPAC) members to learn more about resources for Chapman parents, tips on supporting your student for their greatest success, and how to become involved with the University. Parents can take a photo at our photo booth or join us for lawn games and participate in a special activity for their student.

Come mingle with other new students and families as you explore booths representing over 30 on-campus departments.

Student Business Services and Financial Aid Workshop 
Location: Argyros Forum, 119A  
Representatives from the Student Business Services Office and the Financial Aid Office will answer your questions regarding billing, loans, and scholarships. Both families and students are welcome to attend.

4:45 – 5:15 p.m. 
Igniting your Future: The Candle Lighting Ceremony 
Location: Wallace All Faiths Chapel (Fish Interfaith Center) 
Incoming Chapman students, parents and families are invited to Fish Interfaith Center to celebrate the pillars of Chapman University symbolizing our intellectual, spiritual, social and physical life. This brief ceremony will end with a beautiful candle lighting as we bid goodbye to families and welcome you to the Chapman family! 

5:15 – 6:15 p.m.  
Parent and Family Farewell Reception  
Location: Fish Interfaith Center 
Dean Gail Stearns invites parents and new Chapman families to a Farewell reception with wine, sparkling cider and dessert following the Candle Lighting Ceremony.
